In 1924, the Hungarian Post issued its Charity set, which was sold with a 100% surcharge. Ninety percent of the proceeds was allocated to youth programmes, infant welfare and anti-tuberculosis programmes, while the remaining 10% went to the Post’s own welfare institutions. The stamp designs were produced under commissions awarded through a competition: 300+300 K: András Biczó; 500+500 K: Erzsébet Kovács; 1000+1000 K: Ferenc Helbing.
The surcharge was indicated on the reverse by the inscription: “100%-os felár közjótékonysági czélokra fordíttatik.” (“The 100% surcharge is devoted to public charitable purposes.”)
A small but important detail: on the 500+500-korona value, the initials “KE” appear in a heart-shaped frame above the letter “M” of “MAGYARORSZÁG”. This was the first Hungarian stamp to bear the designer’s monogram.
