In 1944, the Royal Hungarian Post issued a distinctive definitive set entitled “Great Women of Hungary”. The stamps depict outstanding women from Hungarian history and are notable for featuring female figures exclusively. The issue was designed by György Konecsni and released in August 1944. It was the last Hungarian stamp issue of the year, as wartime events prevented further planned issues, including Aviation Fund VI, from being released. The set consists of six denominations, each portraying a prominent historical woman. Its finely detailed artwork is a credit both to its designer and to the printing quality of the period.
Interesting facts about the issue:
- The stamps of the issue later appeared with several different overprints: the 1945 Provisional Stamps, the 1946 Lettered Issue, as well as local overprints in Northern Transylvania, Carpathian Ruthenia, Vojvodina, Upper Hungary and the Prekmurje region.
- The portrait of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy on the 70-fillér value had already appeared in the 1939 Protestant issue, but there her surname was incorrectly printed as “Lorántfy”. The error was corrected in 1944.
