In 1942, the postal administration issued a six-denomination commemorative stamp set entitled “Kings”, sold with a 100% surcharge for cultural purposes. The stamp designs were created by György Konecsni under a commission awarded through a competition.
The denominations depict Kings St Ladislaus, Béla IV and Louis I (Louis the Great), with inscriptions and symbols referring to historical anniversaries. The stamps depicting St Ladislaus commemorated the 900th anniversary of his birth; those depicting Béla IV marked the 700th anniversary of the reconstruction of the country that began in 1242 after the Mongol invasion; and those depicting Louis the Great commemorated the 600th anniversary of his accession to the throne.
