István Horthy, Deputy Regent of Hungary, a committed supporter of Hungarian aviation and an active pilot, died on the Eastern Front on 20 August 1942. He took off on a combat mission in a MÁVAG Héja fighter, but shortly after take-off his aircraft crashed. His death caused widespread public reaction in Hungary, and his memory was prominently cultivated in contemporary propaganda and commemorations.
After his death, the Hungarian Post issued a mourning stamp in his memory.
