Watermark

II. Crown watermark in an ellipse

Intertwined ellipses depicting the Hungarian crown, viewed from below.

Ellipse sizes: approx. 47x43 mm, the maximum width of the crown is 27-28 mm. The horizontal distance between the centers of the ellipses is about 40 mm, vertically about 44 mm.\r\nThe stamps occur only in a horizontal position, in four orientations. The figure becomes asymmetric due to the crown cross tilting, therefore the watermark orientation is revealed by the tilt of the cross. The watermark orientation can only be determined on those specimens in which the crown cross is present.\r\nThe occurrence of the watermark:\r\n1898 Black-numbered penny stamp, 1898 Gazette stamp, 1898 Gazette duty stamp
