Watermark

V. Watermark - crown front view (1908)

1908 cross-section Crown watermark.

As with the IV watermark, it occupied the entire stamp of the turulus-sized issue, and the repetitions were so spaced that each stamp could have received one illustration. Here too, it was rare for a complete design to appear on a stamp; more often, two or more illustrations were depicted in parts on one or more stamps. In the watermark, once in a printing sheet, four crowns were arranged around a factory watermark and a numeral watermark indicating the paper quality appeared. The watermark appears on the letter and news stamps in the upright position and on the port stamps in the lying position, with four positions in both cases. The watermark position on every stamp can be determined, but the watermark orientation can only be established on copies that bear the crown cross. The manufacturing baseline of this watermark was heraldically correct, probably corrected compared to the previous crown watermarks in the stamping of the cross.
