During the Second World War, the retreating German forces blew up all of Budapest’s bridges; the Elisabeth Bridge and the Chain Bridge were the last, on 18 January 1945. In the spring of 1947, the decision was taken to rebuild the Chain Bridge. The public rallied around the cause, and the Chain Bridge Committee was formed to explain the difficulties of reconstruction and appeal for financial support. Work could begin almost immediately thanks to the many donations received, including contributions from abroad. Hungarian stamp collectors also made a significant financial sacrifice to support the reconstruction of the Chain Bridge. In aid of the Budapest Chain Bridge Reconstruction Fund, the postal administration issued another airmail souvenir sheet, again with an 18-forint surcharge (600%!!), this time with a face value of 3 forints.
