Hungary’s last king, Charles IV, was crowned King of Hungary on 30 December 1916 in Matthias Church in Buda. The ceremony was conducted by János Csernoch, Archbishop of Esztergom, while Prime Minister István Tisza placed the Holy Crown on the monarch’s head. Following the coronation, Charles IV performed the traditional sword strokes, symbolising his pledge to defend the country in every direction. His wife, Zita, was crowned Queen of Hungary on the same day. This was the last coronation of a Hungarian king.
These were also Hungary’s first commemorative stamps; previously, only definitive issues had been released in Hungary.
