The Hungarian Automobile Club, in cooperation with other partner associations and under the supervision of the competent federation, organised the Graf Zeppelin airship’s visit to Hungary and its circular flight over the country. The airship landed at the Csepel factory airfield on 29 March 1931. To mark the occasion, the Hungarian Post issued the 1- and 2-pengő denominations of the 1927 airmail series in colours different from the originals and bearing the overprint “Zeppelin 1931”.
Airmail items could be posted at any post office, as well as at the temporary post office in Csepel on 29 March 1931. During its circular flight over Hungary, the airship carried 17,070 letters and 15,359 postcards. Mail was dropped over the following cities: Debrecen, Kaposvár, Pécs, Szeged and Székesfehérvár.
The Zeppelin weighed a total of 60 tonnes and, at first glance, closely resembled a flying silver cigar. At 236.6 metres long and 30.5 metres in diameter, it was an imposing spectacle in the 1930s. The aerial giant was capable of a top speed of 115 kilometres per hour, although it generally travelled at no more than 70 kilometres per hour during normal flight.
