Description
During production of sheets of the 50-fillér value, the numeral 35 was accidentally inserted instead of 50 at position 13 in the sheet. The error escaped inspection, so the faulty stamps also entered circulation, chiefly in and around Kolozsvár. The mistake was discovered there in March 1915. The Director-General of the Post then ordered stocks to be examined and the erroneous stamps to be surrendered; a total of 140 sheets were returned. According to the Monograph, about 200 error sheets may have been printed, but judging from surviving material, more may have remained in unmounted-mint condition, since blocks of various sizes, and occasionally complete sheets, appear at auction year after year. Experienced collectors estimate that 400–500 sheets containing the error may have existed.
